The brief

Supercar front brake duct machining fixture

Simplifying and strengthening assembly

A specialist manufacturer of high-precision parts needed bespoke fixtures to assemble complex automotive components accurately and consistently, including air-intake systems.

The parts needed to be held securely, positioned reliably and assembled repeatably, without slowing production.

The approach

Supercar engine cooling fixture

Tailoring fixtures to each part and process

We designed custom fixtures around the requirements of each part and assembly process:

  • Checking fixtures: Holding parts securely for metrology, so teams could measure size and position precisely.
  • Painting fixtures: Stabilising parts during application to avoid defects and achieve a consistent finish.
  • Cooling fixtures: Holding parts in shape as they cooled, reducing warping and distortion.
  • Compensation fixtures: Counteracting material bending and movement, using advanced design engineering models to achieve the correct finished geometry.

Accurate, efficient and consistent assembly

The finished fixtures improved efficiency, reduced defects and made production more consistent.

They gave the client the precision needed to assemble complex parts accurately, while reducing downtime, controlling costs and keeping production on schedule.
